More info if you open this. Usage Based billing removes all choices because large telcos impose their restrictions on all competitors. It must be stopped.

UPDATE: last week, I file a petition with the Governor in Council (fancy title for the cabinet) to request that the CRTC decision which imposes the same retail rates on all ISPs be reversed. Am awaiting decision on whether to accept the petition. (this is not a petition with signatures, it is a formal request for cabinet to overturn a CRTC decision).

This has gotten a fair amount of media coverage, including:

An update: (and answers to questions)
It appears my petition will appear in the Canada Gazette. The Prime Minister wants a decision by March 1.

With regards to Cogeco. This fight is about the cable/telco wanting to impose their rates onto their competitors. It isn't about what they charge their own customers. So do not expect a ruling that would prevent Cogeco from charging UBB to their own customers.

HOWEVER: if competitors are allowed to compete, it means that they will be able to offer better services, and this will put pressure on the big bad incumbents to make their own offerings more competitive. That is how competition is meant to work.

And yeah, the guy does fart. He just couldn't hold it in, and there was no time to do an other take :-) :-) :-)

  • informative. but they had aussie accents. why?

  • @misterrslim

Because I clicked on "australian english" when buil;ding the video :-)

The xtranormal videos are all over the place with the standard USA accent and I figured I shoudl try a different one and the assie one was of good quality in terms of speech synthesys.

  • Tony Clement has to hear the complaints. He is an elected official. Yes, his goal is to support Bell, but if there is sufficient pressure from the public, then he had to reduce his default support for Bell.

  • The CRTC has approved METERED BILLING (UBB)! You will now pay PER BYTE for Email, Youtube, Windows updates, video games, etc.

1GB of data costs an ISP LESS THAN ONE PENNY. They charge $1 to $4 per GB!

ISPs use using UBB as an excuse to limit our access to their TV competitors.

FAX your complaint to the CRTC: 1-819-994-0218

FAX your complaint to Tony Clement: 1-613-992-0302

  • @robbcarson The internet is not a resource that runs out. You can't use it up like you can with natural gas and electricity. Ironically, some of these telecoms are releasing their OWN internet tv and crap that requires the use of internet. If they're so worried about the costs of usage, then they'd be against putting MORE strain on the poor internet ):

Of course they're just trying to recoup loses from their phone and television divisions, because the internet makes them redundant.

  • Help do something about ubb before election time - visit Open media .ca

  • @lvll138inrs I hope you're not serious!! So, you are telling talented people across Canada you don't care about them in the least. I don't know what you do for work to support your family, but, I'll bet you would be incensed if someone put a suggestion on here that we should use ONLY American workers in your field and to h*** with you, because, cutting Canadian content rules would lead to exactly that in my industry. American shows?? You really like them?? That's scary. YIKES.

  • Why is everyone upset over this?? When was the last time you phoned up your utility company ie: electricity provider, natural gas provider etc. etc. and told them to STOP CHARGING ME BY METERING ME!! You haven't?? Well, let me suggest you and I have been paying USER BASED FEES for decades. It seems strange when the ISP's DARE charge us by a metered basis we suddenly feel the need to complain. Let's not be hypocrytical, next time you get your utility bill, call them too.

  • A few weeks ago I did what some might deem impossible or unthinkable: I cancelled cable TV. In retrospect it was long overdue. With today’s technology and high speed internet connections, I can watch most of my favorite shows on-demand with little or no extra cost. Ditto for movies, news, and even some sports.

  • Sad this is the top UBB Canada link. Not very good look for the Stop the Meter rally footage with Jack Layton and the minister of industry for the Liberals.

  • @brknspacebar No I pay 30 dollars a month and have 10mb dwn and 500kb up unlimited. My family and I watch 3 hours of streaming video on Netflix a day (more than 1 PC). Watch videos on all of the news sites then I get on and watch 10 or so you tube videos a day and we have two gamers that play about 4 hours a day and host servers. Our usage is crazy high...we download tons of stuff as well. I live in rural USA Midwest...so that's what we got.

  • @jklimtsc im not very informed on this stuff so excuse my ignorance, but how does the usa deal with this, are they on ubb as well?

  • @jklimtsc please stop saying those shit. we PAY for the ¨content¨ to be delivered. its not netflix or apple that need to pay. ISP want smaller caps to make more money and to limit netflix which is stealing the tv crowd. Dont you know we are one of the top country that pay a lot for its internet? why are they reducing cap every year while our usage grow every year.

ISP dont sell the internet, they sell an ACESS, and they want to limit it. please stop saying those shits

  • that increase has cost the cable and telephone companies billions to augment their networks. Why should Netflix, Apple etc get to deliver their content for free when the cable and telco's have to pay to build the network to deliver their content? The current UBB proposal will on impact 2% of canadian users while the other 98% will continue status quo. If no UBB everyone will see an increase in their internet bill to pay for the 2% of users.
