SolarDave: What is the payback time for a 4kilowatt system in Colorado?

Dan Yechout: So the big factor there is what happens to the future price of electricity - which is an unknown. A solar investment is similar to other investments that you can't predict the payback it is very much a low risk long term investment because most people will agree that energy prices will continue to rise. The faster the rise they more savings you get.

Typically we will throw out a ballpark number 15 year payback and that is a assuming a 5 percent annual increase in electricity prices as you know they have been going up more like 9% for the past 5 years and just recently went up 15% for electricity prices, so that improves your payback at a rate of 10%, your payback might be more in the 12 year range.

It also depends on what type of product you install. Your payback on a 4kw SunPower or Sanyo system is going to be longer than a 4kw Kyocera or Sharp.

  • Really it depends where you live. In the UK with the feed in tariff for grid connected systems then the payback time is a lot quicker.
