Where would they get seeds? get a loan against the land and go buy seeds.
You could put these people in any african country and the story would be the same.
This is the normal story of African failure. Sure there are bad leaders, but the people are not hard working and disciplined for success.

Shortly, they can not do it because if they plant something, it will be stolen. Moreover, the rightful owner may suffer in the act. Even remaining white farmers do not plant anything anymore, because having a crop is an invitation to squatters.
All of this is a direct result of the failure of the state to uphold the laws.
