U-37 crashes into wall at Detroit

JW Myers in the U-37 Peters & May Unlimited Hydroplane led the other competitors across the start line of heat 1B for Detroit's Gold Cup, but in the third lap, he was battling for second place with J. Michael Kelly in the U-7 Graham Trucking.

Myers got into the apex of the corner in lap two. It appeared the skid fin let go on the U-37. The boat was unable to keep its line and ran through the wash off the U-7, sending it off the course and towards the pits. Myers managed to keep the boat away from the main pit area - which could have been disastrous - but slammed into the Roostertail turn wall, sending pieces of the boat flying into the air.

  • if he didn't turn right, the boat would had hit the camera man. Can't wait until races in pasco tomorrow.

  • Four toes broken, there's a shot of the X-ray online.

  • pretty sad he crashed he was looking good this year especially at madison

  • glad your ok!

  • lol "i got it all too"

  • That was crazy to watch on here....but when you see it with your own eyes its even crazyer.....I am just thankful that no one really got hurt....heal up jw.....we willl see you out there soon....

  • Could have been a lot worse at that speed without the skidfin and he somehow managed to maneuver it away from the crowd. Great driving JW. Now get healed up and back in the driver’s seat.

  • @313pualy Not being in Detroit i can only go by what little has been given online, the radio initilally reported a broken ankle and the H1 site reported a broken foot. Today it looks like the U37 site says JW will have surgery on his foot.

  • @boatracingfan i thought he broke his leg thats what officials in pit tower were saying when i was up there

  • This crash was horrific, the impact sound sends shivers down my spine. So glad JW Myers will be OK, just a broken foot when it could have been much worse. But such tough luck for the U37 team who had just rebuilt that boat and were running great, let's pray for safe racing tomorrow.
