When considering which exercise to use for a workout, the key question is this - am I looking for a functional exercise, or a raw strength exercise? One has different carry over than the other. Many athletes focused on raw strength in the past and found it failed to cross over to on field ability. If we can imagine a spectrum of function with an understanding of how to adjust those functional exercises and by what rationale we are selecting an exercise for our workout, then we can deduce that our exercises will be better for ourselves or for our athlete when we have selected it according to the specific needs (rather than the traditional mindset of weightlifting) of the athlete.
