Communication disorders have most likely been present since humans began to talk. There are genetic, environmental and acquired causes for difficulties with speaking, hearing, understanding and using language in both social and academic settings. Disorders in hearing and understanding verbal language create a domino effect because without strong verbal prerequisite skills, needed for reading and writing, written language skills used in academic learning usually suffer. Impairment in any speaking, hearing or language area creates barriers to our vital link with the rest of humanity. Communication is the bridge, which allows each of us to cross over and share ideas, request information, and express emotions that would otherwise remain hidden.

Speech-Language Pathologists, a. k. a. Speech-Language Therapists or SLPS, are the professionals who assist those with speech-language-hearing-reading-writing disabilities. SLPs are trained to help people of all ages with communication disorders/dissonance. This profession provides information to help prevent communication disorders. They also help children accelerate their speech-language development when afflicted by a number of impairments (Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome) causing communication delay. SLPs assist adults with impaired communication caused by injury and disease (e.g.,soldiers coming home with hearing loss or brain damage from head injury, senior citizens suffering from the loss of speech and/or language from stroke or Alzheimer's disease or adults diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease). SLPs are the experts in finding the best possible alternative methods and viable solutions, enabling individuals to rebuild or maintain their capacity to communicate for as long as possible. SLPs help individuals bridge their way back to humanity.
