  • Hi David, I've really enjoyed your videos over the last few days. I notice it's been a while since your last video, I hope things are well.

I'd like to know what you would recommend in regards to a beginner pipe as the range of size, shape, and material is simply staggering with prices ranging from $10 to $1000 new and used. Do you have a suggestion for those such as I, or is it really a personal preference?

Thank you, and I hope to see a new video as soon as time permits.

  • @RedZombieAU (Pt. 1) You recently posted a question on one of my videos, but due to length restrictions, I decided to respond with a this message instead of posting a reply comment.

Purchasing a new pipe is more about personal preference than anything else. Of course, you should choose a pipe that fits your budget, but simply choose a style, shape, color, and finish that appeals to you. But here are some very basic thoughts that might help.

  • @RedZombieAU (Pt. 2) In some cases, there are small differences between various pipes styles and how well they smoke. But ultimately these differences are so minor and subtle that most folks can even tell a difference.

In general, bent pipes are more comfortable when held in the mouth and cause less fatigue. But it's not like straight pipes will break your jaw!

  • @RedZombieAU (Pt. 3) Rusticated and sandblasted pipes may smoke slightly cooler since the heat is dissipated more easily and rapidly by the uneven surface. But smooth pipes will not be noticeably hotter if you maintain a consistent smoking rhythm.

  • @RedZombieAU (Pt. 4)

After many years of experience, I have found that expensive pipes do not smoke better in any appreciable way from less expensive pipes. Folks who pay many hundreds or thousands of dollars for a pipe may be purchasing a collector's item, but it won't have any magical qualities when they light it up. Of course, I would avoid super cheap pipes, since they may be made of inferior briar or poorly drilled, which can affect smoking quality.

  • @RedZombieAU (Pt. 5) But don't feel the need to spend large amounts of money, unless you want to for other reasons. (If you're very new to the hobby, I would suggest buying an inexpensive Dr. Grabow brand pipe. These are often scoffed at by collectors, but they provide a wonderful smoking experience to "get your feet wet," so to speak.)

    I hope that helps!

  • Great Tip! Very informative. Thanks for sharing.

  • @RedZombieAU I just wanted to let you know that I tried to reply to your questions in a private message. But my attempt failed because YT said you had blocked messages from folks not in your contact list. So I'll attempt to piece together a reply here in multiple comments.

  • I just wanted to say I really like your channel. Keep up the good work!
