Back in the day, middle-road stations would often play a soft substitute cover, and this was a perfect example. It was played on both WIP and WPEN, MOR rivals in Philly in the early '70s, but they never announced the artist. I told a friend the words and asked him who performed it, to which he replied "Steam." So for years I thought this was Steam...until I actually heard the Steam version on oldies radio 30 years later. Tracking down who did this cover was tough, since it never charted, but I found it on an obscure website of a public station in NJ. The DJ was nice enough to record it for me. Since then I found the LP and present it to you. IMO it's BETTER than the original.

  • I have the Hugo Montenegro "Man From U.N.C.L.E." LP, some surprisingly good music on it, too. I have never heard this version. Grew up with Steam singing it ;-) This is definitely a change! Hugo had the hits with the themes from the Clint Eastwood westerns, notably "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly". Steam's follow-up to their version was "I've Gotta Make You Love Me" which I prefer to "Na Na..."

    Thanks!
