  • Nice. But one thing struck me as a surprise: you wrote the land of your birth has changed beyond recognition. Could you please say something explanatory about that? See, being born in a socialist atheist country (GDR) which was simply "usurped" by the "enemy brother" state and now is capitalist christian, I would not have expected somebody from, say the UK, make such a statement as you did. I'm sure you have reasons too, and I'm really curious to learn about them.

  • A lot can happen in 16 years. Cities have become more crowded. Violent crime is on the rise. Surveillance cameras are everywhere. Young people's attitudes have changed. Most of my favourite TV shows are no longer being broadcast. Banknotes have been redesigned. Police cars look different. Payphones work differently. The government increasingly rules by decree. So many differences, big and small: it's like being in a foreign country.

  • Ok, I see. I guess the point is that you've been away, and when you take visits back there, everything has "suddenly" changed, whereas if you had stayed, the gradual shifts would not have rendered the land to seem a totally different one. I mean, every culture changes. But when you're not living IN it all the time, rather get only a close look after times of absence, those changes become much more visible.

  • Exactly so.

  • I liked the theme in this one Andrew. I can empathize a little bit with you here in this video. I was born in Germany.... and it is the land (and people) that I love. I am working every day so that I can return there. And I am fully aware that I will be considered an "Outsider". Identity..with me...it is a very difficult subject to explain..when I am an "outsider" not only in the land of my birth..but also in the land of my "citizenship." Hence the "man in the middle" phrase on my channel.

  • It's true, you have to pretty much give up on the idea of a fixed identity. Wherever you happen to be, everyone sees you as belonging to the other place. It's really made me appreciate the naive inanity of the phrase "world citizen" because there is no such thing: if you're not one of "us", you're one of "them", and that's all there is to it.

  • Great video, Andrew! I like the positive assertion "life is good". Yes, it's not just the UK that has changed; the entire globe is succumbing to totalitarian elitism. Thus the push for one world currency and one world government. However, we can be happy and content if we choose to be. The good friends you have made, the people you love, your family, these are the things of happiness. Thanks for another great video, sir! Hope to see more!
