Over the past two years the McMaster University Libraries have undertaken a dramatic transformation from very traditional academic library to innovative, user-centered partner in teaching, learning, and research. University Librarian Jeffrey Trzeciak explains how and why his staff reinvented itself by embracing Web 2.0 tools, and shares lessons learned that may be useful to other colleges and universities.
Jeffrey Trzeciak is the University Librarian at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He is responsible for the management of the Thode Science and Engineering Library, Innis Business Library and Mills Library for the Social Sciences and Humanities. Jeff has more than twenty years experience working in academic and public libraries. He has spoken internationally on a variety of topics including digital library initiatives, web 2.0, organizational change, and library innovation. When not at "work" Jeff can frequently be found online in Facebook, SecondLife and World of Warcraft.

  • Wow, this is incredible work! Great contributions by the McMaster Library towards making an excellent University even better.

I am glad that the students and the administration recognize the contributions from the Library. I am looking towards McMaster for ideas that I can apply on my own campus.

  • Thanks again, Jeff. Great job as usual. I continue to get similar comments from my colleagues. The McMaster University Library team is raising the bar on what can be done with teaching, learning and technology in higher ed. Your students see that, too, as evidenced by the award they gave your team for "a significant contribution to the lives of students." Keep it up.

  • I always knew crushing orc skulls makes for better researchers and better students
