Bowfin is the universal and correct term.In NC we call them Blackfish....

We have dogfish in southern Illinois but we call em pond grinnel. Real fun to catch put up a really good fight too.

@buzbait88 they are different actually cause my grandpa was a commercial fisherman and they are not "mud fish" they are mud puppies a bowfin dogfish and mud puppie are completley different types of fish

@chinglengvang dogfish, mudfish, bowfin its the same thing but people in different parts of the country call it something different.
