Sid Meier's Pirates! was created by Sid Meier and MicroProse in 1987. It was the first game to include the name "Sid Meier" in its title as an effort by MicroProse to attract fans of Meier's earlier games, most of which were flight simulators. The game is a simulation of the life of a pirate in the Spanish Main in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

The game was widely ported from the original Commodore 64 version. It was ported to the Apple II (1987), as a PC booter (1987), Apple IIGS (1988), Macintosh (1988), Amstrad CPC (1988), Atari ST (1989), Amiga (1990), and the NES (1991).

The Atari ST version featured a copy protection scheme requiring the player to identify the first privateer ship they encountered by their flag. The Commodore 64, Amstrad, Apple IIGS, PC and Amiga versions also used copy protection, in which the player had to confirm the timing of the different Treasure Fleets or Silver Trains by referring to the game manual. The Amiga version featured the best graphics and audio of any of the original versions.

  • I would easily admit that this is one of the best games ever. However, it isn't anywhere near one of my most fun games ever. As games got older, they get more potential. This game was fantastic for its time but compared to a game like Skyrim, the only way you could enjoy yourself more is with a nostalgia high. Don't take this as hatred for the game, 30 years from now people will be saying the same thing about Skyrim when they are comparing it to Super Duper Space Adventure 7.

  • @neonits7 I must have the 2005 version.

  • So anyybody know the gameplay differences between the different ports and remakes of the game? (other than the windows version which was a step down gameplay wise IMO) I remember playing this on a friends C64 when I was little and then later got the NES version. Never knew it was ported to DOS/Amiga/Genesis as well.

  • better than the remake

  • I wish you could still hail ships for news in the new game.

  • this game is so sick! my pc cant handle these graphics

  • Always thought this game was in black and white only :P thats how i played it on the mac,.

  • I played Sid Meiers epic game Pirates daily for five consecutive years.

It excells, because you were free to do what you wanted. There was no mission or guided story. Just fun.

  • Played that on the C-64, the AMIGA500, Commodore´s CD32 and still playing this stroke of genius for the current WinVersion.

I love them all, but i prefer latest one for its smooth gameplay.

    Greets to all swashbucklers´n´pirates ;)

  • This game was/is INCREDIBLE! First sid meier game I played. This game, original railroad tycoon, and civ 3 are my top games by sid meier.
