EDIT: I had no idea there was an official animated version of this book! Thanks for telling me. All 5 animated Eric Carle works are available on DVD, the set is called: The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Stories (2006), it can be found on sites like amazon.com.

Having seen the original, I think it's far superior to my own creation! But still, I enjoyed making this. So do check out the original and long live Eric Carle!

Sadly out of print and somewhat hard to find, 'I See a Song' is a gem among Eric Carle's always beautiful books. I bought a copy off of ebay and fell in love with this wordless book, filled with the sort of pictures you might see in your mind while listening to music. After reading on the Caterpillar Exchange about how appealing it was to children, being a Pre-K teacher myself, I decided to have some fun with it.

I scanned in the entire book and set it to music in this little video, leaving the beautiful art to speak for itself, but with a few transitions and zooming effects to make it a little more interesting.

The songs featured are, in this order:
Peer Gynt, Op. 23 Morning
Wagner, The Ride of the Valkyries
Mozart, Concerto for Flute and Harp in C Major
Unknown, some harp music I found online
Bach, Cantata No. 140 Sleepers Awake
Beethoven, Piano Sonata No. 14 in C Sharp Minor
Emilie Autumn, Tambourin
Unknown, more music found online
Songs from a Secret Garden, Heartstrings
Yanni, Santorini
Plus some free sound effects

Enjoy!

  • His illustration style is just exquisite!! I always love his work.

  • well done! I like your version, very suitable to young kids. Simple and allow for more imaginations through different music matching to the pictures.
