This is the third scene from our 1996 documentary, SOUTHBOUND. Recovering from the deforestation of the late 1800s, the rich and diverse hardwood forests of the Southeast face a new round of logging. After running out of a cheap source of pulpwood on public land in the Pacific Northwest, multinational corporations have turned their attentions south and eastward. This time, the fodder for their mills is trees from mostly private land. The depressed economies of the southeast are easy pickings, where many citizens in states such as Alabama are more than willing to welcome the new source of jobs with open arms. Others worry that the race to make a profit will result in the plunder of the great hardwood forests, a claim that is underscored by the fact that timber companies are fast replacing the hardwoods with faster-growing pine plantations. SOUTHBOUND documents the debate. Full movie on DVD available at www.highplainsfilms.org.
