  • A mate of mine went to see Lindisfarne at Leeds Town Hall in 1972 and Genesis were supporting. Genesis (no surprises) blew Lindisfarne away and the change in style, quality and quantity of music made them sound like sissies in comparisson, according to my mate and I can well believe him

  • @neil73 I really enjoyed your anecdote. I actually have never heard any Lindisfarne. Since I generally like "prog rock" (whatever that is) like Yes or ELP (blasphemy - I don't care for Floyd...gasp) I was curious but I always had some (completely zero-based, unfair) impression that Lindisfarne was too hippie-frippie or fruity for me. In which case if Genesis mopped the floor with them I am amused. But. Now you have motivated me to go look them up and give them a listen/fair shake. Thanks.

  • Thanks so much for this. A great, great recording. Never heard this before. It is such a wonderful song. Gabriel is doing very well here, gorgeous vocals. It doesn't sound like 1972, this beautiful music makes me imagine they are performing in some medieval court for a king...so atmospheric and old english sounding

  • @18jemini Thank you very much for taking the time to Comment. Yes, I have a very similar medieval Olde English atmosphere that I feel especially when I listen to the Trespass and Foxtrot albums. As a matter of fact, I made an image-stream video here specifically to capture exactly the medieval mood in images: "Genesis - Stagnation - Live at Solihull, England 1972" ( search YouTube or go to URL youtube.com/watch?v=o5E9gBwbsus ). Take care.

  • Wow !!! Great sound for a bootleg in 72' !!! Do you know if Van der Graaf Generator were on the same bill ?! where do you guys get this stuff?! thanks!

  • @Mr2gallants

It's absolutely true. If you only read Genesis books, you'll think otherwise, but I interviewed Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel about it for the VdGG book I co-wrote. Lindisfarne consistently went down great on that '71 tour. Also, read Tony Banks' intro to the VdGG cd box set. He says Lindisfarne went down well every night, not so with Genesis and VdGG. Remember, Lindisfarne were superstars before Genesis and this tour is what catapulted them.

  • @bucka001 that's just not true.

  • @ksjoyjespeace

Genesis wouldn't have opened for VdGG on this bill as the Graafs had split up by August '72.

  • @PalerShadeOfWhite

To be fair, Lindisfarne was more of a folk rock band, sort of like Britain's version of The Band. And if someone has a predilection for prog rock, they're going to like Genesis more. But it was actually Lindisfarne who went over far better than Genesis or headliners VdGG during the Six Bob British tour of '71. That tour helped make Lindisfarne (temporary) mega stars. If there was any mopping up, it was Lindisfarne doing it on that '71 tour...

  • @PalerShadeOfWhite Glad you enjoyed it! Lindisfarne were more of a pop/folk type band. Imagine the Strawbs meet Bay City Rollers and you've got an idea of what they sounded like! But you've probably heard them by now
