The Kingdom of Siam Gets Wings.
" In the year 1914, Lieutenant Colonel Luang Gat Yuthakarn was one of three Thais sent to learn flying at the Flying Training School in France. Upon his return, the Flying Division was established in Siam making it the first country in Asia to have a aviation program"
directed by the great Khun Thanit Jitnukul (Bang Rajan).

The film is based on true historical events which took place during the reign of Rama VI. Please see the links below (they are in English).
The making of this film actually parallels the struggles many of the struggles these Siamese aviators faced.

Had a job getting this and then got a VCD without subtitles. According to the DVD shops in BKK no one has heard of this film in Thailand...Hey that's what he told me.

Was a bit disappointed with the CGI effects, but they wern't half as bad as those in the Axis of War films. In this day and age they are just plumb dreadful.

@JollyRodders Many films from Thailand will have an English and Thai title so most folks would've never heard of the film if you asked for "First Flight".

The premis is true---Siam was the first Asian country to see the potential in aviation whereas Japan was focused on the army and navy.

I believe one character was based on a real historical figure (the guy with the moustache you see vomiting). I saw the film and enjoyed---could do without the weak romance though.

firstflight has been renamed and will premier in Thailand Jan 31 2008...in a few more days! firstflightmovie [dot] com ... this is a great example of the new wave in Thai cinema!

@secretarytocapt3 Thanks for the reply. Well I did manage to get a VCD with no subtitiles, but I just couldn't find a DVD with subs. Tried in alot of places too.

Never mind, to console myself I just ordered Bang Rajan another Thai film from Amazon for five quid :)
