On Saturday 7th of August (sorry about the date error in the credits) the volunteers to Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board in Nigeria went to Mayo-Belwa, which is about an hours drive from Yola, and were received very warmly indeed. These dancers, the children watching... and the community coming up to give the dancing girls money were part of our lovely reception.
"Bi e ba ngbo sekeseke, bebe mi ni pario (Bi e ba ngbo sekeseke, bebe mi ni npariwo If you hear my brass ornaments jingling, its my waist beads jangling.)" Well, these are proper northerners for all I know; their Yoruba is what they would call "Yoruba abroad" at home. We do find people like that from other parts of Nigeria whose command of their own mother tongues is no longer assured because they were born in western Nigeria -- Hausas and Igbos, e.g. Nice to see Yoruba belonging to that club!
