PlaySafe, a UCSF Sports Medicine community outreach program offers free annual cardiac physicals to Bay Area high school athletes. In 2011, 327 athletes were screened and 16-year-old Ryland Burke was one of six athletes identified with a serious heart condition. Ryland was diagnosed with a rare heart arrhythmia and underwent a non-invasive heart procedure at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. After the treatment, Ryland returned to the football field where he's caught four touchdowns and many first downs for Redwood High School in Marin.
