Before WW2, pianists occasionally performed the keyboard music of Handel during their recitals. But after the Baroque performance practice craze took over, it was concidered unfashionable to perform Bach,Handel et.al. on the piano unless it was a transcription by Busoni, of course. Somehow, Scarlatti escaped this edict. I suspect that if Chopin had been a Baroque composer, he would have also. Fortunately,a new generation of pianists such as Angela
Hewitt have decided that it is quite fashionable to perform Bach on the piano. Hopefully, we will once again here some of Handel's magnificent keyboard suites along side of those of Bach

  • I first discovered this piece from the Murray Perahia recording. He repeats each section but here there are no repeats. Still a wonderful interpretation.

  • Way back when (1938) , pianists had a limited amount of time to record their performances on 78 RPM records. Therefore, they did not take the repeats. Thank you for your comments.

  • Really wonderful. Thank you Beckmesser2. And thank you Maestro Fischer

  • Why would it ever even matter if it's fashionable or not... are pianists acting like high school kids?

  • There is something special about Fischers interpretation. I'm not a musician, so I can't really say what it is, I just know I like it very much, and I've heard many versions and interpretations of this piece.

  • beauty of his tone and dynamic range are unique

  • très beau mais écoutez aussi Alexander Alexandrov ...

  • I disagree that it became unfashionable to play this music on the piano. The Scwann catalogue is literally bursting with recordings on the piano of of works from this period made throughout the 20th cent. Rosalyn Turek was arguably the first to present an "authentic" & scholarly performance of Bach, et al., and most of her recordings are on the piano. I have a great disk made in the '60's of de la Rocha playing all these suites . Angela Hewitt is merely following a long-standing trend.

  • What, exactly, is sacreligious about it?

  • No it's not. All Piano-versons are just plain boring compaired to it. Fully 13 minutes overdose!

  • Is it on YT? Will check and listen! (:-D) Thanks!
