  • @snakes3425, There was no W. Virginia at this time...It didn't get statehood until 1863

  • @reznor811

West Virginia is a strange case, the northwestern most counties in Virginia were far more pro-Union and opposed the secession of Virginia, West Virginia declared it's independence from the Confederacy in 1861 and defected to the Union, Robert E. Lee was one of the commanders of the Confederate Government forces sent to put down the revolt but was defeated at Cheat Mountain

  • @snakes3425 Ok, I'm just sayin......Antietam/Sharpsburg was a Confederate Victory!

  • @snakes3425 The Battle of Antietam took place in September of 1862. West Virginia did not become a state until June of 1863.

  • @s6u6r6f6

War of Northern Aggression that the South started.

  • @Intelpentium54321

They were, in fact Lee's first major command was to repel the Union advance and put down the rebellion in west virginia and bring west virginia back into the Confederacy however it ended in disaster

  • @ke4bss

It was a draw, Lee however lost 30% of his army killed, wounded or captured an McCleanan got cold feet overestimating Lee. Also on the western front the Confederacy had been mauled being defeated at Shiloh, Ft. Henry, Ft. Donoelson, Corinth, Island No. 10, New Madrid, the Offensive into Kentucky ended in disaster soon after Antietiem at Perryville forcing the Confederacy out of Kentucky for good, and Memphis, New Orleons, and Nashville had fallen to Union Forces

  • wait wasn't virginia and west virginia two seperate state by now?

  • Capt Carey F Grimes, Portsmouth Light Artillery CSA. Defender of Gosport veteran of the seven days campaign and Malvern Hill..unlimbered his battalion of three companies, four guns each above Pipers Farm on the Hagerstown Turnpike posted to drive the enemy back. While directing his batteries fire he was shot from his horse; to die on the field of honor 17 Sep 1862 Sharpsburg, MD.

Grimes is my ancestor in this War of Nothern Aggression ; a heritage never forgotten..
