Our TA here at UT played the Denisov sonata yesterday for his class performance. He played phenomenally, though I cannot say I have a real opinion of the piece (I guess I attribute that to not being mature enough as a saxophone player or musician to appreciate it to its full extent).
Terry Jennings wrote a very awesome cello/saxo composition entitled Piece for Cello and Saxophone (1960). A brillant composer/performer, check it out.
The main effect on me was to buy some killer cello music after reading drakesaxprof's advice. (But hey, don't let that go to your head Jim. )
I like Bid call. My professor performed it here last year on her recital of chamber music. Really nice piece... I know I'm thinking of another piece, but I can't remember...
If you don't mind a percussionist sitting in, "Sati" for alto sax, amplified cello, and percussion, by Dana Wilson is very good.
Denisov's cello/alto sonata! Definitely in my top favorite pieces out there for saxophone.

In college I will never forget getting invited to fill in for the fourth cello in a cello quartet on Baritone sax for a rehersal. Everybody was suprised how well it worked.
For quite some time I've found that the cello and saxophone share interesting...personalities, I guess one could say. I've heard cellos that bare striking resemblance to the saxophone and vice versa (although I've also heard them sound quite different!) In our book of repertoire, there are many cello/sax duets listed, but as I can't see the actual scores, I have no idea what is truly good. Has anyone heard/had experience with such a duet?
