The Jam http://www.paulweller.com/index.php http://www.thejamfan.net/welcome.htm were an English punk rock/mod revival band active during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

They had 18 straight top 40 singles in the United Kingdom, from their debut in 1977 to their breakup in 1982, including four number 1 hits. Two of these 18 singles were only available in the UK as imports, and as of 2007 they remained the best-selling import singles of all time in the UK. The Jam released one live album and six studio albums, the last of which, The Gift, hit number 1 on the UK album charts.

They drew upon a variety of stylistic influences over the course of their career, including 1960s beat music, soul, rhythm and blues and psychedelic rock, as well as 1970s punk rock and new wave. The trio was known for its melodic pop songs, its distinctly English flavour and its mod image. The band launched the career of Paul Weller, who went on to form The Style Council and later had a successful solo career. Weller wrote and sang most of The Jam's original compositions, and he played lead Rickenbacker guitar. Bruce Foxton provided backing vocals and played unusually prominent basslines, which were the foundation of many of the band's songs; including the hits "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight", "The Eton Rifles" and "Town Called Malice".

Modfather...at The Jam Stawood gig my grlfriend Lisa got backstage and had all the band members autograph the pic sleeve single "All Around The World"...please don't ask me and you don't wanna know what happened to that priceless item. But the memories remain. Thanks for that killer comp video you forwarded to me of The Jam...sometimes I miss those days and other times I don't...I still can't watch the movie bout my friend Paul B. (aka Darby) "What we do is secret" anyways... Long Live Rock!

Sorry I get the SLC now....I never realized there was ever any kind of scene out in J. Smith Land...cool....I have to add that I can only think of two other great three piece bands....obviously CREAM...and my L.A. Punk friends The Plugz....who opened for The Jam at the Starwood....stay original Modfather.

@THEDV13 : Now that would have been a great show. I was young and living in SLC at the time, but I had few friends from L.A. who used to go to shows at The Starwood (e.g., The Germs, Black Flag, etc.). Too bad those early U.S. Jam gigs weren't recorded for posterity.

I saw The Jam live on their first two U.S. tours....the second tour in support of "This Is The Modern World" was the best....it was at The Starwood in Hollywood, CA...we were still pogoing....there was never a tighter, more exciting, three peice band in the history of rock and roll!!!Long live the 1970's!!!We didn't know we were living in a dream.
