Autism Speaks Does Not Speak For Me: A Reply to Their Recent PSA

Recently, Autism Speaks portrayed autism in a very negative light, as a "scary" enemy that must be overcome. There was no message of hope for our future through accepting and nurturing our children, only through "fixing" and "curing" them. This video is a rebuttal to that perspective. great vid, i hate how autismspeaks generalizes eveything and makes autism look like a brain tumor, i also think autismspeaks is a scam for bankrupting families by "fixing and curing" and to make the drug and medical companies richer.

@CrawdaddyJoe If the people here want to help they need to attack the DDD and not AS. The DDD is upchucking on its own bureaucracy, and everytime a piece of paper needs to be signed it goes through 15 different people with fiftenn different salaries.It took 11 months for me to get my budget for my son and I still need to drive 68 miles a day to get him to his center for 5 hours a day cause they wont include transportation.But its a good place so Im willing to go.

@CrawdaddyJoe It boils down to this. If some one is happy with who and what they are, fine. They dont have to be cured. No one is forcing them.But dont speak for the people who have to quit their jobs to stay home for life and take care of autistic adults 24/7. We need a lot more support{right now all you get is 5 hours a day, and the group home waiting list is 25 years.} and the gov just doesnt think its important enough.what do you think happens to seriously autistic people after we go??

@CrawdaddyJoe The autistic people I speak about are the ones in the video that make up the bulk of the popluation. No one seems to be aware of this. The people who are so seriously affected look,act and behave Precisely as they appear and their care takes up 24/7.They dont speak, read, write, interact, have hobbies or are capable of learning to the point of independent function.Why do people blame moms for wanting normal kids who can live happy independent lives? Thats a crime or something???
