I know I struggle to find
The way to speak my mind
In twenty five words or less
I never have that success

'Cause sometimes I want to say
All the things that I'm thinking about you baby
It's never seemed to work before
I guess I'll try it just once more

So here I go

You're cute, you're sweet, you're soft, you're smart
You fill the gaps inside my heart
You're nice to hold and hard to leave
You're everything that's good to me

I love your hair, your pretty eyes
The way you leave me mesmerised
I guess there's just one thing that's true
Above the rest - that I love you

I'm sorry if I make no sense
The art of succinct compliments
Has never been a skill of mine
But I'll just do it one more time

So here I go

You're cute, you're sweet, you're soft, you're smart
You fill the gaps inside my heart
You're nice to hold and hard to leave
You're everything that's good to me

I love your hair, your pretty eyes
The way you leave me mesmerised
I guess there's just one thing that's true
Above the rest - that I love you

'Cause all I really have to do
Is tell you how much I love you

About this song:

It's never been a thing of mine to be able to say it short and sweet! My blogs are long, as you may have seen, but they shouldn't be. I'm just no good at saying things in very few words. And in a conversation on MSN with Hayley (my girlfriend) one night, we discussed this. After failing dismally at giving her a short compliment ("you make my life good"), I gave up. As you can see, it's not really my thing. But this conversation planted the seeds in my mind, seeds that would germinate into little... compliments. And I mean little ones!

So, the day I was finishing up my first version of Your Sunrise, I was sitting in my bedroom about to burn it to CD to give to Hayley. But I had the idea somehow to write a short filler song, something to round off the CD. Suddenly the MSN chat came to mind. So I opened up my laptop, and typed out all the short compliments I could think of. And over the space of ten minutes, I turned them into a little poem. I whipped out a ukulele and started strumming away. The uke was desperately out of tune, and so was I, but I ended up with a little song called The Art Of Succinct Compliments. It sounded terrible, and that was part of its appeal to me. It was comical in how bad it was. Hayley loved it, needless to say... I despise it still and like to pretend it doesn't exist, but she swears she'll keep the song hidden from me because she loves it so.

As it turns out, I thank the Lord that He did give me this idea, because a few months later, sitting in disappointment at the keyboard thinking about all the musical ideas I wasn't having, I recalled being at Hayley's the other day, where I had improvised a little piano version of the song for her. I liked that, so I tried again, but with a few different chord voicings this time. It didn't sound half bad, so I grabbed my laptop, hooked it up, and recorded it. Suddenly I started toying with the synths available, and experimenting with sounds I hadn't used before. I noticed a grin on my face as I listened to music I never thought that I would be able to create... and within the night, I had pretty much finished the song. This was my first real foray into the genre of electronica - I'd wanted to go there before, but could never really pull it off. That changed with this one little terrible ukulele ditty that I'd written in twenty minutes. And hence was born the most popular song I've ever written.

  • @jamus23 Rule number one: NEVER bag out a musician that you will never be half as good as. So what, you think that by going onto one of his videos and insulting him makes you big, well good on you then :P I'm waiting for your attempt to make better music than Dan... Not that its possible! :) Now that you're done insulting you can go back to your tv and play Call Of Duty all day like the "cool" bloke you are :)

  • @jamus23 A critic who can't take criticism! There's a turn up for the books ;) Now go away and make your own music, and then I'll come and tell you that yours is bad too :)

And I might keep referring to you in the third person like you keep referring to me... haha. "These guys", as in the ones who wrote the song, would be Summertime's End... notice something about my username? Sneaky stuff ;)
