This is not simple diffusion, it is facilitated diffusion because it involves membrane channel proteins to allow hydrophilic substances to pass through.

Only small, lipid soluble substances, such as dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide, can pass directly through the phospholipid bilayer through simple diffusion (without channel proteins)
