First half of the F-14 Tomcat Demo at the NAS Oceana airshow in 1998. Uncut and good camera work. The pilot shoots flares during the Cuban-8.

  • The old bird can move...This seems better then the F-22 demo...

  • @kishoresawh That is why Tomcats ALWAYS stole the crowd. They do a REAL fighters flyby, even the Hornets were NEVER close to her. Hornets by mandate, Tomcats by choice, ANYTIME BABY!!!!

  • @okisoba That is what the F-22 is supposed to do, but yeah no more close engagements, at least in this decade.

  • @BAACCOOOOCk Yeah, the two engagements against Libya were in defense of the carrier group and its aircraft. F-14s did a whole bunch of fighter sweep/escort for strike packages during the Gulf War, but Iraqi aircraft always ran away before clearance to fire or PID was established, or random F-15s were vectored instead. Unless our opponents and we come up with some extremely effective countermeasures to BVR sensors and weapons, we won't be seeing too many "knife fights" ever again. :(

  • @okisoba I agree with you. Most F-14 engagements were fleet defense and interceptions. Engagements now of days are BVR, and we in the U.S. have not really been in a conflict involving close " Knife Fight" flying for a good while.

  • @BAACCOOOOCk F-15s definitely got most of the air combat glory in the West with it serving during Israel's wars against countries with big air forces in the 70s and 80s, and then getting all the CAP stations in country during the Gulf War. The F-14 could have done the same thing had it been given the opportunity. As for maneuvering (which the F-14's good at), there was maybe 2 real dogfights during the Gulf War. The rest of the kills were "face shots" or chasing fleeing aircraft.

  • @BAACCOOOOCk Yeah I suppose, with AESA. Hard to jam and detect on most RWRs. But, similarly, you can say that it's better than F-15's APG-63/70 without AESA. You can put the technology on an F-5 and say that it's radar is better than any non AESA radar. Put the technology on the F-14 and have a much greater surface to fit way more transmit/receive modules than the F-18 can fit in its nose.

  • @okisoba The Super Hornet has a better radar and can maneuver better than a Tomcat, but the Tomcat to me was the best Naval plane that brought so much to the table during its prime. Hell, I even got an F-14 tattooed (literally) on my chest. The F-15 sort of dominated the air during the 4th generation prime, but the Tomcat was the one that set the bar for all new aircraft. I will say though back in the day these airshows were a lot more ballsy than today.

  • @BAACCOOOOCk Hornets are better? Maybe at being slower. :P The Tomcat got its legacy by being the most capable and feared fighter plane in the sky for over 3 decades. It sees you first (by a large magnitude), shoots at you first and, if it comes down to it, can go toe-to-toe with any fighter in the dogfight arena.

  • 90's to me was the decade to see air shows. After all the regulations now days you wont see the hot dogging of fighter planes. Sucks!

  • @scupking This guy obviously has more balls than the average airshow pilot. This is why the Tomcat got the legacy that it has. Hornets may be better, but I have not seen any fly as hard as this here Tomcat pilot.

  • A hammer through the sky! She was one sexy bitch!
