"Destiny of old age"
.......................................
"fado da Se velha" means something like " Se velha's fate " ; " Se Velha " being an old church in Coimbra .
- A part of a special comment made by a special guest.

Photos: Portugal 1910, found „on-line".

Record: José Paredela Oliveira, vocal with viola and guitar, HMV, Lisboa, 1927.

Inspiration /:)/ - one morning spent at Cape ST Vincent a few years ago, Europe's most south westerly point, the "Land's End" of Portugal.
And one 'lazy afternoon' in Portugal's most picturesque fishing village of Nazaré .

  • hahhaha , not really man , taking the mick there ... "fado" can mean something like "fate" or yes , "destiny" , yet in this case it only refers to the traditional style of music which happens to be dedicated to that old church , namely "Se velha" ... I truly hope that between one comment and the other lies the exact meaning of this title ... hahahhah

  • Thank you for your truly (!) cheerful laugh.

Sounds naturally and brought some special air here.

I am transferring part of your explanation (for which I am grateful) to the comment about video.

So many Portugueses were watching this clip, commented and noone ventured until you...(a big smile !).

  • Wery-wery strong. Is vois male or female, do not understand.

  • Male: José Paredela Oliveira.

    Written in my commentary.

  • wow amazing, my grandfather is a 1920s portuguese man, he left portugal when he was 25 or 28 ... and he immigrated to brazil towards the end of WWII... amazing to see where he came from...

  • Your grandfather's country has arrived to you via mine, Poland/Polonia. Best wishes.

I am visiting Algarve in Sept.

  • Faz sempre bem recordar a voz do Paradela de Oliveira, cantor que integrou a chamada "Geração d'Oiro" em Coimbra nos anos 30.

  • I liked it very much. Thank you for loving Portugal so much! As you know, this is Fado de Coimbra, the old city of students. The singer is Doctor Paradela de Oliveira. This Fado is diferent from the Lisbon one, but is also very sentimental. Only men used to sing Coimbra's Fado, usually university students singing their love to their beautiful lovers.

See you in Portugal soon!... Fados, Nazaré, Coimbra, Lisboa, bacalhau, sardinhas...

  • I have first heard this same fado in the Michael Winterbottom film The Claim (2000). The singer is Milla Jovovich - she's not really known for her singing, but I think she sings it quite well.

  • Actually this Fado is titled Aquela moça da aldeia.

    Lyrics:

    Aquela moça da aldeia

    Que eu conduzi ao altar

    Há-de trazer-me à ideia

    Desejos de eu ir rezar

    Amei-te só de me olhares

    O coração adivinha

Deus fez as almas aos pares

    E da tua vida minha.

  • tiamacheta....esqueces o pastel de nata e o cafe!! :)

  • put a tear to me eye

  • @TheLeo44pt

    Bem Haja Dr Paradela!
