During a light snow on Feb. 24, 2005, a car skidded and struck a natural gas vent alongside Highland Ave. The leaking gas ignited, and the car became involved in fire. Fire companies used a fog stream to contain the fire and dissipate any unburned gas. Public Service Gas crews arrived and determined how to stop the leak, so after the car was dragged back from the vent, firefighters put out the fire with a dry chemical extinguisher and PSEG people moved in to stop the leak. Although it looks fairly quick, this is edited down. The incident lasted about two hours. (The driver of the car had injuries, but nothing serious.)
