@mrbing993 I agree, it is a tad too fast. His 1952 studio recording is slower and a better performance overall.

@vonzeke Beethoven was Toscanini's favourite composer. I expect that he would respect the score to the last detail.
I would pay good money for this recording, and I'm sure Beethoven would be satisfied with it.

@Arcolithe he knows the score for all instruments by memory. he doesn't need the sheet music.

Also I should mention the clarity of the playing. It is crystal clear. Everybody is on the money.

The thing is that the intensity drive is a little overstated. It really wasn't necessary to take the tempo up this much to "kick it" so the beat wouldn't die. The harmonic rhythm was energetic enough. You had a myriad of notes injecting energy into the drive and increasing the tempo to this is a bit much. But nonetheless he had a great conceptualization of the "symphonic sound" and I think came the closest to what Beethoven had in mind. You can hear the beauty of the symphonic sound.

I think it's a little fast. Karajan's version is way more majestic and imposing. This just makes you feel like he wants to get the job done.

@mmbmbmbmb Yeah, fuck you

Man, he's ripping through it, isn't he? This about the fastest I've heard this movement played. No complaints whatsoever.

It's really impressive that he conducted without scores. His style of conducting is just to keep time, but his interpretation is still amazing.
