Let's just say the local cable company's subcontractor decided not to follow the predetermined path for the new cable to my house, and took a shortcut through some rose bushes instead.
If they had stayed alongside the driveway almost down to the street and then did a dog-leg back to the pedestal, the cable would have been only 15 feet longer and the roses would still be there. The supervisor's excuse was that it would have been too much work for them to avoid the garden entirely, and besides, he didn't see any roses growing there when he visited earlier in the year (while snow was still piled high).
