The original Kingston Trio of Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds, and Dave Guard perform their adaptation (arranged by Shane and his friends and collaborators the late Tom Drake and Miriam Stafford) of the traditional song of a real match race between thoroughbreds Ten Broeck and Molly McCarty in 1876. A version closer to the original was put on vinyl by the legendary Bill Monroe in 1947 and is sometimes credited as the first "genuine" recording of bluegrass music. This was one of the last cuts recorded by the first configuration of the Kingston Trio, as Guard was about to leave the group in a few weeks' time, to be replaced by John Stewart.
I wish someone would post Guy Davis's version
