Tribute for the Transgender day of Remembrance, 2008

The Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28th, 1998 kicked off the Remembering Our Dead web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Rita Hesters murder — like most anti-transgender murder cases — has yet to be solved.

Although not every person represented during the Day of Remembrance self-identified as transgender — that is, as a transsexual, crossdresser, or otherwise gender-variant — each was a victim of violence based on bias against transgender people.

We live in times more sensitive than ever to hatred based violence, especially since the events of September 11th. Yet even now, the deaths of those based on anti-transgender hatred or prejudice are largely ignored. Over the last decade, more than one person per month has died due to transgender-based hate or prejudice, regardless of any other factors in their lives. This trend shows no sign of abating.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance serves several purposes. It raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people, an action that current media doesnt perform. Day of Remembrance publicly mourns and honors the lives of our brothers and sisters who might otherwise be forgotten. Through the vigil, we express love and respect for our people in the face of national indifference and hatred. Day of Remembrance reminds non-transgender people that we are their sons, daughters, parents, friends and lovers. Day of Remembrance gives our allies a chance to step forward with us and stand in vigil, memorializing those of us whove died by anti-transgender violence.

  • The indifference to these deaths by mainstream society is what truly sickens me. These are PEOPLE being murdered. Not characters in a fictional story. If the status quo wants to see them as people who "dress funny," that's fine. BUT they are still HUMAN BEINGS! So if the message is that we can go around killing anyone randomly 'cause they're different, then most of us better watch our backs. Everyone is "different." So who's next? People who wear glasses? How about those who are indifferent?

  • @k66omega I appreciate your message....thank you!

  • true its sickening how someone can kill someone who is just being theirsevles i don't understand that they might not understand us but how can u kill people and feel good about urself its sick why is there so much hate in this world people who died like that i and many others will always think about them no matter what we have hearts not hate amen

  • @SuperChris2727 Thank you for your comments,,,,,I wish I could say this video, over a year old, was long outdated and had no relevance - but sadly it continues to reflect the reality of our world. The names on the list change yearly, testament - sadly - to the unchanging nature of hate.

Wow, such beautiful singing! I have so much respect for anyone who is strong enough to live their truth in the face of opposition.

  • This is more than just a transgender issue. It's a basic human rights issue. Even if you disagree with transgenderism, you do NOT have a right to use that to promote anti-trans violence. All of us, trans or otherwise, have a right to live our lives in peace. All those beautiful trans souls who are no longer with us -- just thinking about it is heartbreaking. God bless them all.

  • @SuperChris2727 ...that's right, EVERYONE needs to get involved in stopping these heinous crimes against humanity, speak out LOUDER about the injustice, MAKE politicians take these acts of criminal malice more seriously, talk about it among ALL COMMUNITIES...the only way we make a significant impact and get the word out is TOGETHER!

...the Trans Community worldwide needs to step up and keep these issues alive and band TOGETHER to stop all of the ignorant portrayals regarding Transpeople! NOW!

  • @unmeasuredinstances ...anything i can do to help end the brutality and indifference toward transpeople worldwide i'm going to do it or at least try my best...

  • @MSM3NT4LL I am sorry it has taken me so long to reply, but just wanted to send you my care and hope that things go well. Our paths are never easy but hopefully, in the end, despite the hardships, we find the strength and the support we need to make it through. All my love sweetheart....Sarah

  • Thank you for the support and understanding.
