I created this video for a 4th grade art and character education unit. Students are discussing the things we can do to understand, accept and appreciate differences in others so that we can decrease discrimination and bullying.
Last year I found a lesson by Tricia Fuglestad titled "Different is Good" and loved it! This year I have been looking for ways to incorporate even more technology with this lesson and was super excited to stumble on the "Talking Friends" applications. I am also having guest speakers (including my principal) come in to speak about times when they were either discriminated against or bullied so that kids can hear real life stories of how others were treated poorly for being different (and how they dealt with this treatment) .
Inspired by these conversations and the story of "The Sneetches", by Dr. Seuss, 4th grade artists will think of a friend (real or imaginary) who is different from them. They will draw and then paint themselves celebrating these differences in a composition of both figures standing arm in arm.
The applications that I used to create these "interviews" can be found in the iTunes store listed as: Talking Tom, Talking Larry, and Talking Harry.
You can upload each video directly from the app to YouTube. I imported each video into iMovie so that they would all exist as one file on YouTube instead of three.
