    Realy I didn't now for Merle until I've heard TE played that Nine pound hammer song. That got me here..and I am not surprised to see that some little things that Tommy does with guitar Merle did in early days...

    Hey, it's called a "Double Thumb Arpeggio". You roll/strum your thumb over the 6th, 5th, 4th and 3rd strings then pick the 2nd string with your index finger then roll over 6th, 5th, 4th and 3rd again and then pick the 1st string with your index finger and repeat that with each of the chords. Hope that helps!
