Jerry Mazza on "The Great Mosque Contretemps"

Independent New York journalist, Jerry Mazza, has published another in a series of exceptional articles
about 9/11 and its ramifications, in this case, concerning the controversy that has broken out over the
construction of a mosque in the vicinity of Ground Zero. (The article can be found archived at

amenities that makes it more comparable to a facility like a YMCA rather than a single-purpose house of
worship. But, as he also observes, religious tolerance is among the virtues for which this nation has
been so widely admired in the past. The NEW YORK POST suggestion that this would not be tolerated in
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for example, is therefore a faulty analogy, because there are more differences than
similarities in the political structures of our countries. He also observes that the Mayor of New York
and other civic leaders have been among the strongest supporters of the project, which would be built at
the site of a former coat factory, which was an eyesore to the neighborhood. Americans are easily
manipulated by the national media, however, which had done all it can to inflame passions against Muslims
as people and Islam as a religion, in spite of the absence of any bona fide proof that Islamic
