Walter Brown began singing with the Jay McShann orch. in 1941 and had a hit that same year with "Confessin' the Blues".
He went solo in 1944 and recorded for the Queen label. 1947 he recorded some sides with the Tiny Grimes Sextet which resulted in their version of the hit "Open the Door Richard".
This disc was considered to risque and was banned from most radio play lists. The label withdrew it from sale soon there after.

  • Wow no wonder zappa aint played on radio

  • There's a Yosemite Sam Bugs Bunny cartoon, Fearless Freep (sp??) or High Diving Hare I believe, in which Bugs of course torments Sam, who encounters a door on a plank and shouts, 'Open the door! Notice I didn't say Richard.' This finally explains that line! Thanks for posting! Great tune, and risque all because of the word damn! We have come a long way.

  • Richard had the chronic!

  • My name is Richar and I am 71. I have been called everything from Dick, Dickie and Big Dick. I have alwyays been asked Have You Got Any Gum On you Dick. I have never been offended so why should people have been offended by this song.

  • "Gettin' a little piece/peace" is probably what got it banned...
