Issued in Canada October 1969 on Bell / T.A. 186.

Oops, there's a typo in the video. I accidentally typed October 1970 in the title credits. Please disregard. I can't change it now!

Calgary native Bruce Innes began playing guitar with blues legend Josh White while still in college. This led to his forming The Blue Sky Singers in 1960, who were voted "Best Vocal Group In The Nation" by Cavalier magazine. They made one single for Dot Records. Innes moved to Los Angeles in 1964, and after writing songs for and performing with Maury Wills, Bruce put together The Original Caste in 1967. Featured vocalist was his wife, Dixie Lee Innes, from Victoria, B.C. The original group members were Bliss Mackie (rhythm guitar), Graham Bruce (bass) and Peter Brown (drums).

Signed to T.A. Records and distributed by Bell, and with songwriting and production by Dennis Lambert & Brian Potter, The Original Caste hit the first time out with "One Tin Soldier." It entered the RPM 100 on November 1st 1969 and hit #6 on January 24th, 1970. It also reached #34 on the Billboard Hot 100. The stereo mix is presented here.

This song had a further turn in the spotlight in 1971, when it was featured in the movie "Billy Jack," performed by Jinx Dawson and Coven.

  • I remember just sitting down in the theater coming inside from a beautiful day. I had never experienced a movie that grabbed me in the first few minutes"One Tin Soldier" was playing as these cowboys stampeded mustangs over a cliff...Go ahead and hate your neighbor...Go ahead and cheat a friend... I think I was in absolute tears.
