Frans de Wijs
Cheeck to cheek
-E.B. Berlin-
Errol Garner Style

Dr. Frans de Wijs (1938) was born inTilburg, Netherlands. He graduated as a dentist from the University of Utrecht and headed his own clinic at the nearby Medical Centre 'Berg en Bosch' in Bilthoven, which specialises in oral implantology.

He started to play the piano at the age of five. He received virtually no lessons and can still hardly read music. This did not stop him from forming his first trio (piano, bass, drums) during his University days and he still playing in his way to everyone's delight.

Frans was fifteen years old when he first heard Erroll Garner play during a radio broadcast and was hooked for life. Garner remained the main inspiration for his own performances. Jan van Diepenbeek (connoisseur and foremost collector of Garner records in the Netherlands) sent a copy of Frans de Wijs'CD for review to James M. Doran, a personal friend and greatest fan of Garner's, author of the book "Erroll Garner. The Most Happy Piano" and President of the Erroll Garner Society. His comment was: 'He captures the essence of Erroll Garner better than anyone I have ever heard!'

Frans installed a white Yamaha in his surgery which he uses to keep his fingers nimble. In some cases, he explaines, it also helps to lessen a patients's anxiety.
