This violin is attributed to Justin Amédée Derazey, or of his factory in Mirecourt, although it may have been a product of the Mougenot workshops of Mirecourt or Nancy. Justin was the son of Jean Joseph Honoré Derazey, a Parisian born maker who apprenticed with several makers in the French capitol, and subsequently crafting many of the school violins sold by the great maker and copyist J.B Vuillaume. The family business passed to P. Mougenot after Justin Derazeys death in 1890. Mougenot ran factories in both Mirecourt and Nancy, and used both H. Derazey and J. Derazey labels. Justin Derazey used only the finest seasoned Transylvanian maple and Swiss pine which were guaranteed to be most resonant woods. His oil varnish was a specially prepared formula. This violin was locally re-graduated by W.S. Maynard in Norwich CT on January 10 1895; possibly for the instruments owner, G.J. Lebsmon (sic.).
