@Greg2600 NASCAR only makes things safer when they are forced, cause it cost money to make a track safer. you only see NASCAR make changes after a very popular driver gets hurt or killed and public pressure follows.

I am not a Nascar fan by any means but I have a lot of respect for them. And in any sport it is sad when someone loses their life. But at least he died doing something he loved.

@WackyRace1016 I have read, but cannot confirm, that Weatherly usually drove with his seat belt loosely draped over his lap. And in those days, a lap belt was all drivers used.

why couldn't they just make the window net in 1964 instead of 1970 because i read that weatherly hit his head on the steal plate wall this crash was much more serious then petty's 1970 crash

@stevester79 actually: In the 1970 Rebel 400 at Darlington, Petty was injured when his Plymouth Road Runner cut a tire and slammed hard into the wall separating the track from the pit area. The car flipped several times before coming to rest on its side.During the accident, Petty's head hit the track pavement several times, which led NASCAR to mandate the installation of the Petty-developed safety net that covers the driver's side window. sidenote: Richards mother made the first one for her son

thats why its called the "Weatherly net" this is the aciedent that brought that device about. And yeah WTH is with the music when he slams the wall. Freaking producers.

this was the year he was going to win the championship and win 3 championships in a row he had like a 350 point lead if there was a window net he might have lived although he hit the wall at like 110-115 mph thats a tough lick in the drivers side rip joe weatherly one of the best drivers in nascar
