  • I left the Latin Rite and joined the Byzantine Rite at age 11- Its deep devotion and love of God drew me, after a visit made out of curiosity.

Born-Again type churches almost ruined any faith I had in God when I explored them. They are completely devoid of any true beauty or intelligent devotion- Pure American, Protestant Southern Hillbilly television hogwash...

  • Why is Greek Catholocism so popular in Ukrane?

  • @SorokChyetirye Yes, living in the vatican city state, you would not surprisingly, be content with the current state of affairs. At the council of Ferrara/Florence it was not the emperor who broke off intercommunion it was the monks and clergy and laity, after the death of the patriarch. The Ferrara Council declared the Basel group heretics and excommunicated them; and the superiority of the Pope over the Councils was affirmed in the bull Etsi non dubitemus of 20 April 1441.

  • @LiturgicalChants And it should remain that way. The controversy between Rome and Constantinople was not caused because Rome demanded more power than it deserved. It was because the Patriarch of Constantinople had an emperor to deal with, and not all Greek Emperors were, shall we say, forgiving to the Eastern Church. Leo the Isaurian's iconoclasm, for example, had to be condemned as a heresy by St. Gregory III - and the appointment of Photius to the seat of Patriarch by Michael III...

  • @SorokChyetirye He is more than a big brother.

The pope personally appoints the Major Archbishop of Kiev in the Ukrainian catholic (uniate) church.

The ukrainian catholic church does not have the freedom to decide who it wants to elect , nor is it allowed to call themselves a Patriarchate. If the Pope does not agree to the Archbishop, the Ukrainian church must not elect them or it is excommunicated. Make, no mistake, yhe Ukrainians are under the Pope's control, not their own control.

  • @ukerkater And... thank you for the reply.

  • @ukerkater In some ways, it is still that way. The Pope is a big brother of the other bishops, in that he definitely must consult with them before making a decision about what is and is not the teaching of the Church. But unlike the other bishops, God the Father gave the Bishop of Rome the Keys to the Kingdom - that's like a father giving his son the keys to the house. He has authority no other bishop does - declaring the final word. As for Antioch, Peter did start Antioch, but he ended in Rome.

  • @ukerkater The Pope and all bishops share, in some ways, the same authority. And of course, all of them and us are prone to human weakness. Even Peter was, as he revealed not 5 verses later in Matthew. But the Holy Spirit revealed the Truth of Christ being the Son of God to Peter first. Thus Matthew 16:19 is not a praise of Peter's faith; it is a statement of fact. Christ built His Church on Peter, as He demonstrated by this revelation.

  • BTW, St. Peter also founded the Antiochian Church which is Eastern Orthodox. Historically, Church authority was based on a conciliary model, unlike the current structure of the RC Church. St. Peter was esteemed as the first among equals, more like a loving big brother....he did not demand that other apostles surrender authority and in fact he encouraged their leadership recognizing them as equals.(Council of Jerusalem is an example).

  • @SorokChyetirye --I appreciate your comment, but you are assuming that Orthodox don't hold St. Peter in a position of special honour. We do, most definitely. But we believe that the Lord praises the FAITH of St. Peter as the cornerstone of the Church, not the PERSON. The faith of the Apostles including St. Peter is present in all of the patriarchs and bishops...there is no one to one correlation per se.
