The lines "I've been looking for a job but it's hard to find / Down here it's just winners and losers and don't get caught on the wrong side of that line / Well, I'm tired of coming out on this losing end / And honey, last night I met this guy and I'm gonna do a little favor for him" are absolutely top notch. In those 4 lines, you know who this guy is, where his life is at and what his options are, and what the future most likely holds for him. Bruce is a class A poet but who says it?

Hate to tell all the Dylan fans out there but Bruce is much better. critics will never admit it but just look at all of Springsteen's songs, its not even close

It's about a NJ man who's up to his ass in debt and decides to work for the mob to expedite the pay off. He's telling his girl to meet him in AC because he's got to meet people down there. The 'Chicken Man' in the opening line is Philip Testa, former boss of the South Philly-based Bruno crime family who was blown to bits by a bomb in his house on the night of March 15, 1981.
