The fact that the egg goes into the bottle is due to the principle of expansion and contraction of air. As we light fire in the bottle, air inside the bottle gets heated up and expands. As we seal up the bottles mouth with the egg, oxygen is soon used up, fire extinguishes. Air inside the bottle cools and contracts. A vacuum is created in the process as the egg blocks the mouth. This vacuum then sucks the egg into the bottle. As for all above experiment conducted with the egg, the egg broke into parts. Extension1 uses a water filled balloon in place of the egg, and a clearer result is shown without breakage. Extension2 using a balloon is a more visible example to show the pulling-effect created by the contraction of the air inside the bottle, the balloon inflates inwards as the air inside the bottle contracts.
