does the katadyn hiker filter out any chemicals? like if you take water from a river downstream from farm land where pesticides or fertilizer could have washed into the water?

Hi - the activated carbon core of the Hiker filter removes pesticides and herbicides from the water. Once activated, it needs to be replaced after 6 months or 750 L, whatever is achieved first. Happy camping! Sibylle Müller, Katadyn Products Inc., Marketing Services

Thanks, so why isn't the Katadyn Hiker advertised to filter out chemicals like agricultural pollutants? I've seen more expensive Katadyn filters which are advertised to filter out chemicals, so what types does or doesn't the Hiker remove?

Hi again - The activated carbon used for the Hiker filter removes pesticides and herbicides from the water. It does not eliminate any heavy metals or nitrate.

Is nitrate a likely chemical to come across in rivers or streams around agricultural areas? Is nitrate a chemical found in fertilizers for instance?

Basically when travelling you always try to choose from the best available water source. Therefore you would avoid water from rivers or streams running through heavily fertilized areas. Nitrate can indeed be found in fertilizers, but it depends on the region, the kind of fertilizer, the climate, etc. etc.

The cartridge capacity of the Hiker depends on the quality of the water. The Katadyn Hiker was tested at 200 gallons (750 liters) and found effective for removal of bacteria and protozoan cysts like Giardia and Cryptosporidium. For maximum performance, cartridge should be replaced after 200 gallons (approx. 750 liters) or when the unit becomes hard to pump.

Ok so heavy metals are out... how about plastics & polymers in the water, as well as industrial chemicals like arsenic or MTBE? Can this filter handle any of those? I live in an area where upstream industrial pollution would be the main concern.
