Killing the creature is not too difficult (not easy either, though).

Here's my ammo count. PC version, normal difficulty (which relates to hard on PS2). It should take less ammo in the PS2 version:

08 Broken Butterfly shots (firepower: 17)

12 Striker shells (firepower: 8)

04 Semi-auto rifle slugs (firepower: 11)

So, if you think you have enough ammo, go for it.

Only the rifle shots were *not* delivered while it was in frozen status, though. It may get more damage while frozen.
