In 1985, Paramount licensed Cheers to ZDF, or Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen, a national German TV channel. Note, however, that the show was only licensed, not actually sold in syndication, meaning that the German station could re-set the show as they saw fit, including redubbing and resetting the location.

The cast was as follow:
Ted Danson - Hubert Milbe
Shelley Long - Diane Zimmerlinde
Rhea Perlman - Carla (no last name given)
Nicholas Colasanto - Rudi (no last name given)
George Wendt - Helmut (no last name given)
John Ratzenberger - Uwe (no last name given)

'Prost' is a German form of 'Cheers,' and Helmut is the name given to Norm, so the title literally translates "Cheers, Norm," interesting since George Wendt was not the leading part.

The show was actually aired as part of another larger program "Ein Himmlisches Vergnugen."

Also note that the typeface used is Cooper Black, as used in the Cheers ending credits.

The theme is transcribed as follows:
Den Alltagsärger überstehen
Kostet sehr viel Kraft,
Wer Stunden hart geschuftet hat
Ist jedesmal geschafft,
Wer spannt dann nicht gern mal aus,

Ja, dann sucht man sich ein Lokal
Wo man sich wie zuhause fühlt
Und seinen Kummer (he-) 'runterspült,
Freunde treffen, reden, trinken
Und trotz aller Sorgen
Fröhlich sein bis in den frühen Morgen.

Diskussionen, Streit, Versöhnung
In vertrautem Rahmen
Jeder wird hier gleich begrüßt mit Namen

The theme is translated as follows:
To survive the everyday anger
Costs much time
If you work for hours
You're exhausted
Who doesn't want to get away from everything?

Then you search for a bar,
Where you feel at home.
And you can drink away our worries.
Where you meet your friends,
And talk, and drink, and drown your sorrows,
And be happy until the early morning.

Discussions, and fighting, and then we make up
In a close group!

  • Interessant!

  • ja, the lyrics have a similar feel but do not translate the same. the german lyrics actually mention going to a bar.

  • Oh Gott, das ist das Schlimmste was ZDF jemals verbrochen hat. Wie kann man einer so tollen Sendung und vorallem einem so genialen Song so etwas antun?!

Yes, that too (Lovejoy, Frink, Sideshow Bob). But thats not what I meant. He is the guy who was resonsible for the shoddy translations.

  • @primzahl13 Wa you mean by that? Is he one of the Simpsons voices for the German version?

  • @wrtlpfmpf

Yeah, I know that TR-808 sound from anywhere. I was almost expecting the singer to start freestyling to the beat.

  • @primzahl13 Das war so klar!

  • OMG!

  • Das ist SCHLIMM!
