He meant that we are in a realm we have no answers for at this time, and any insertion of ideas are philosophical and mythological.

@tonguemybumb Stephen Hawking loves anecdotes, you're right! You fundamentally misunderstand the big bang theory and relativity if you have to ask what happened before the big bang. Time is subjective. The fabric of space time expanded from a singularity, matter and energy assumed the the forms they have now out of pure existence and information. Asking what was before the big bang is like asking what's farther south than the south pole; it doesn't make sense.
