I was told this was the largest supermarket in Manhattan! I liked the cheeses and olives and variety, but like everything else in NYC, its just too small a store

It is not even close to being the largest food store in Manhattan. I wouldn't even really call it a supermarket, you can't buy a lot of things you'd expect to find at a supermarket.
The largest supermarket here now is probably one of the Whole Foods, but Fairway is a local phenom and they have a few big ones too.
But I agree, space is not common in the City.
