Journalist, author, diplomat and Adjunct Professor from the University of Sydney, Richard Broinowski tells the story of the Fukushima daiichi nuclear power plant disaster. His talk looks back to the development of the Nuclear Village in Japan, including General Electric and the American state's successful efforts to sell nuclear energy to Japan under the auspices of selling them energy self-sufficiency. Richard speaks Japanese, has lived in Japan and made many visits. He has thoroughly researched the incident and subsequent events and impacts. He is confident that Japan has, post-Fukushima, 'turned a corner' and notes that many Japanese prefectures are becoming less inclined to restart reactors in the wake of the Japanese people's diminishing faith in the technology and its various safeguards. Will we see Japan embrace renewable energy production with their famous reputation for innovation and stoicism? What does the Fukushima disaster mean for the future of the nuclear power industry beyond Japanese shores? What of the Australian uranium mining industry, and its commercial viability? Richard Broinowski gave this public lecture in the Hawke Centre at the University of South Australia in February of 2012, ahead of the release of his forthcoming book on the subject.

It's so often the case... the precautionary wisdom is disregarded, and eventually the imagined becomes the real. We need to wake up (and wake others up) to the unacceptable risks associated with this technology, and get serious about rolling out renewable energy generation alternatives

Don't just dismiss nuclear generated power. Make the people who profit from it make it fail safe.

You make a valid point. Fukushima and the increase in public awareness has prompted a tightening up of safety regulations at plants, and has also increased the capital cost of establishing new plants. Ultimately a rapid transition to renewables is required.. and possible

Doc Mitchell is talking to all of us about the nuclear Fallout. Hey Doc, could we just move into vaults? Oh wait... the overseers are complete idiots. We're doomed.

We don't need Nuclear power. Only the rich people who profit from it says we need it.

Actually they did design it to withstand an earthquake, and a tsunami. But they didnt expect a tsunami of that size. The simple truth is you cannot predict the un predictable, and that is exactly what a reactor engineer is doing. The only reactor that seems to have potential is a Molten salt reactor because you can walk away from it. But you are wrong....and the earthquake is not what did the reactor in.

Next, Chenorbyl happened because idiots let even bigger idiots run an outdated plant that should've been shut down. You see, one day, the plant operators decided to test the safety features. BY TURNING OFF THE FUCKING COOLING SYSTEM AND USING A SAFETY PROCEDURE NEVER MENT TO BE USED ROUTINELY!!! What could possibly go wrong?

I support nuclear power. I believe the reason why incidents like Fukushima and Chenorbyl happen is because of the idiots who built/ran the plants screwed up one time too many. To start off, the designers who made Fukushima deserve to get shot because those idiots hadn't expected a major Earthquake to happen in that area, even though it was in an ACTIVE FAULT ZONE!!!
