Poverty doesn't exist because the poor are lazy. Especially in a developing (third world) country like Bangladesh, the poor are some of the hardest working people on the planet. But hard work doesn't necessarily mean you can break the cycle of poverty - what's why we need to help.

Recently, I had the opportunity to meet this really inspiring 15 year old. He supports his mother on about $2 a day by running a recycling business in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He trades used bottles for vegetables and then sells the bottles at a profit.

As inspiring as this is - $2 a day isn't enough to break the cycle of poverty. It's barely enough to avoid falling back into extreme poverty. And, even though I am here in Bangladesh, I am still unsure what I can do to make a lasting difference in the lives of the poorest of the poor. Advice and inspiration from the YouTube community is definitely welcome.

  • Not to say you're wrong. REALLY But I want to say is you said "what did you do when you were 15?" my answer would be "having fun with my friends." My point is I say this because it's unnecessary for me to live in a poverty when I do have money from my parents and is able to enjoy my life. SO I always thought the question about "What did you do" is weak to many people. However, your question is strong to raise awareness and sense of reflection to help these people and become selfless.

  • @RX117STARoTOAPRIME I can't disagree with anything you just said :)

  • Your videos are really inspiring! I would love to use this one for my blog for The Borgen Project, an organization that works to bring political attention to global poverty. I think it's so important to spread the word and educate people about what a huge issue this is, and that we really do have the potential to make a difference.

  • thats unfair. SO many people in america hardly work and just sit around, but then u get a boy like him. he works hes ass off and gets 100 taka a day, while some americans sit and maybe type a little and get payed heaps. its just not fair on them.

  • I often think about celebrities like Paris Hilton when I think of kids like this. One was lucky to be born into a life of privilege and has done little (if any) to deserve tha privilege. Whereas you got a kid like this, and he's work ethic should have earned him millions of dollars if he had the right opportunities.

  • For people who are sayin this person's bengali sucks...this person grew up with parents that spoke English at home. If you guys think he needs to spend more time learning his mother language, he has already spent an incredible amount of time helping his motherland. And also, lets say you were this guy. You wouldn't even bother trying and would probably tell the translator to say everything for you. At least he know his bengali may not be great, but tries to communicate the best as possible.

  • and you cant speak english, did you sit and think for one second that maybe ENGLISH is his first language since he was possibly BORN and RAISED in an ENGLISH speaking country?

educate your self before you go on here and bash someone trying to make a difference you ignorant fool.

  • In america the spoiled rotten kids today will not do anything to help their parents but expect the parents to give give give. this is whats wrong with america. when i was 10 yrs old , my sister and I were mowing 3 and 4 yards a day for $3 each then we would keep $1 each and give the rest to our single mother. you will never see a kid do that today but expect everything for being born. very sad. these kids need to live in a place like this for a month or two and learn.
